UICycleWaste Reduction and Recycling Program
Every day on the average, every American throws out about of 4.5 pounds
of waste. At UIC, over 6000 tons of waste materials are generated each
year. Averaged out for 35,000 students, faculty, and staff, each of us
at UIC discards about a pound of waste a day. That means that close to
a quarter of our “personal waste” is created here at UIC.
The goal of the UICycle Program is to minimize that waste by encouraging the conservation
of resources – through using less in the first place, reusing what’s
already been used, and recycling (as a last option). Together with programs
at the campus unions (Student Center East and Student Center West) and
at the campus housing facilities, the UICycle office works to provide
opportunities to recycle while raising campus environmental awareness.
Through this website, you can learn more about how and what to recycle at UIC and how to use
fewer materials overall. In addition, since you don’t spend all
of your life on campus, we offer additional resources that you can use
to minimize waste at home.
If you have questions or comments about recycling and waste reduction at UIC, please contact
us by phone or email. Campus recycling only works because of you, and
we want to help make your efforts as effective and meaningful as possible.
